View of the city from the harbor waters
Fort #1 - unknown island
Super hidden lighthouse. Don't think that'll do much good.
When we arrived on the island, we were greeted by Sir Topham Hatt! Or our future tour guide, the ghost of a Civil War prisoner. I liked calling him Sir Topham Hatt much more. Obviously, since I can't remember his actual name.
Georges Island is the site of Fort Warren. I was originally misled into thinking this was a Revolutionary Fort...but now, it wasn't built until later. It was, however, a prison during the Civil War.
We had some time to kill before the tour, so we just wandered around to explore the place. Of course I climbed on the rocks despite the warning signs.
Somewhere along the way I decided I needed to do some boating/kayaking exploration of all these little islands. Of course, a 30min ferry is a really long day of paddling, on choppy water. So I need a boat to get to one island and then can kayak around the close ones. I could spend days out there...and you can camp on some of the islands! Oh I really want to go back.
After George's Island we were off to Spectacle Island, where we had planned to spend some time at the beach. Well, our transfer ferry was running way behind so we had all of 15 minutes on the island before we had to catch the ferry back to the city. Lame. It was still good to see, but not quite long enough.
And finally it was time to head back to catch our flights. Sad. But the sunshine and the time on the water was the perfect way to end our trip. At least that's what I was thinking when we got off the boat. Then...we were given on last, Go America! Yay Boston! History Rules! moment. We were walking back to our hotel when a parade of sorts came down the street. These guys ended up basically escorting us half way back to our hotel. Now that's a fun way to end a vacation.
