Susquehanna State Park
Saturday was going to be a much crazier hike and camp trip, but a few people bailed so it was just me and two girlfriends. We ended up doing 5 miles through Susquehanna State Park, which is just about an hour north of Baltimore.
A few Maryland State Parks are just areas and trails. No big entrance station, no rangers to ask for directions. You're just driving and then you're in the park. This is sometimes very nice. Less formal. More natural. But also kind of odd if you don't know where you're going. Luckily I am smart and figured out where the trail was off of pure wild instinct - just drive to the water. It's always what they tell you if you're lost in the woods, find the water and follow it, so why not go with the same idea when trying to find the woods.
So we started out right along the banks of the Susquehanna. It was chilly, yet all the kayakers setting out really made me want to get out on the water. I should have made friends.
The trail began right near some historic builders. If you're ever in doubt about a historic building in Maryland, it was probably a mill. Mills everywhere! And here too was the mansion of the main mill guy. It had been added on to at some point. Probably should have taken the tour.
The 5 mile excursion was a combination of trails the took us up and around a bunch. We saw a dam, a wonderful meadow (where's a kite when you need one) and across a smaller river leading to the Susquehanna. It was a pretty fun scramble across the rocks.
After the hike my one friend had to go, but Lauren and I were staying to camp. But seeing as we only hiked 5 mostly easy miles, not 8+, we finished super early. We didn't want to just sit in front of a campfire for the next 8 hours, so after a nice picnic along the river we went exploring. We were only a few minutes from the town of Havre de Grace, so we went and strolled along the water, had some coffee, met some fishermen, and saw a lighthouse.
We thought about getting crabs after wandering by many crab pots, but we couldn't find anything quickly, so we stuck with our camp food. We had lots of good girl talk and a roaring fire. So glad it's finally camping weather!
