We headed out to Shenandoah with our friends Mike and Marissa and their 2 year old, Jon. Them being mostly non hikers meant a small hike and a lot of relaxation. Just what we needed.
Friday night was exciting though because we saw bears on the way to the campground! It was the first bear sighting in all of our trips to Shenandoah. We're pretty sure this happened:
Bear 1: I dare you to climb that tree. If the branch doesn't break you get first dibs on the picnic basket.
Seriously, the bear in the tree looked precarious. I didn't think the branch could hold him. And with every step he looked like he had to rebalance from the wobbling and jam his claws in the bark to keep from falling.
Saturday we set out to do a 2 mile hike. After which the baby was going to nap while John and I did another hike. We left our trail somehow and ended up actually on hike 2...so we skipped the fun waterfall part (saw smaller falls) and helped the non-hikers back to camp. We probably added 3-3.5 miles to our hike. Good for us, bad for friends. But Little Jon did amazing. He hiked along with us for awhile. On the rocky terrain he kept tripping, but he did pretty good for a little guy. He loved being out side and kept stopping at the trees. There was Mama Tree and Dada Tree. And a few others. Eventually he had to go in the backpack, but he mad it further on foot than we thought he would.
Back at camp we put the kid down for a nap, started a campfire, and ate a lot. Then it was just time to lounge around and chat. We had some fun ranger encounters, one who joked about his wife but then told the guys to hold on to the good gals they had. The other came by and said "There's been a report of too much relaxation at your site."
Oh, speaker of rangers...the people across the street from us got in big trouble for leaving their cooler and a full bag of trash out over night. Not sure, but it looked like they got a ticket. Bears are no joke people. It's not hard to put your stuff in the car when you aren't around.
Anyway, after Jon woke up we took a drive along Skyline Drive and then did more food and campfire. We had a massive blaze going. It was hot enough to melt a beer bottle.
Super good times.
