Long overdue recap of Julie's visit to Maryland/Virginia.
Friday: Dinner with John at Bluegrass Tavern. I remember this place being much better, but apparently there's a new chef so that could explain things. Once I got a re-do on my duck it was really good (was cold the first time). Also, although I felt John was being crazy I don't think Julie hates him.
Saturday: Julie and I headed south towards Shenandoah to enjoy the mountains, wines, and orchards of Virginia. We visited three wineries : Delaplane Cellars, Three Fox Vineyards, and Naked Mountain Winery. Three Fox was having a Lucy Stomp event so we got to stomp grapes (though we didn't do the contest, ours was just for fun). This was also my favorite as far as wines go. We got a bottle and sat out in the grapes. The stink bugs were out in full force and I was picking them out of my car a week later. We're trying to forget the attack in the port-a-potty.
Between wineries two and three we took a break to pick apples. The orchard that John and I went to last year, and loved, claimed they were nearly out for the season so I decided to try somewhere else. I didn't love it. We still got a bunch of apples (which I used to make apple butter - and it turned out great) but it was hot and they were hard to come by. We did get cider and caramel apples, both of which were yummy.
Saturday evening we went to Old Town for dinner and then went on a walking ghost tour. The place is very creepy. Be sure to check your ice for body parts. hehe
Sunday we didn't have any set plans so some of the morning was wasted making them. But all turned out well. First we went horseback riding. It wasn't the most beautiful area in MD/VA (I wasn't driving back to the mountains) but it was a good hour long ride. Except when our guide decided to tell us about the time he got shot by gangsters on the trail. Ohh Maryland and your horse stealing gangs.
We then hit up the ren faire - Julie's first time! We ate chocolate covered bananas and had some mead. We watched a joust - complete with a knight who was probably trying to butter us up so we'd cheer for him. Even though we were sitting on the other side. Julie also went to a fortune teller, who probably was a little bit on point.
We then went up to Baltimore and watched the Ravens game with John. Probably not Julie's favorite part of the trip, sorry Julie!
Great times indeed. When's the next trip?!
