Seeing as Harper's Ferry is actually quite close to Baltimore you would think I'd have been there already. But no. So it's been on the to-do all summer. John was planning a section hike of the Appalachian Trail, and it was decided that Harper's Ferry was a good starting point. We camped there for the long Labor Day weekend and then he set off Tuesday morning on the trail.
We stayed at a campsite right on the Shenandoah River. Would have been nice if we hadn't been given the crappiest site - really only big enough for our tiny tent. Good luck to families who get that site! Also, the camp was right by train tracks and a tunnel. Note to travelers: One honk before going through the tunnel is sufficient. Ok, maybe two just to be sure no one is coming from the other side. But 5-10 honks. As you pull up to the stop sign and the entire time you drive through the tunnel? A little excessive. Especially since it's super small and you can see if anyone's on the other side fairly well. Anyway, we didn't sleep well.
Still, the weekend was fairly enjoyable. Muggy as all hell, so not what we expected, but nice. We stuck to really short hikes around the historic town. Didn't do more than 4 miles ever because we were both covered in sweat just from being outside in the humidity. We jumped in the river to cool off a lot - John even took a nice back every day. Except right on the banks there's a few feet where you just sink into knee-deep mud. Totally gross. Further out is nice for swimming.
John was going to start on the trail Monday afternoon, but at the last minute his friend decided to join him for the first leg. So we waited around until 9pm for Kevin to show up. I then drove away alone, which was sad, but I felt better that he would be hiking alone.
So far, the first leg: 55 miles in 4 days, has been hot and grueling. They're actually stopping early, so more like 40 miles in 4 days. They did some miscalculating one day and didn't get as far as they needed to. I'm headed down to do some light hiking and boyfriend rejuvenating (that sounds dirtier than it should) before he starts leg two with another friend.
