Belize Part 5

This day was far from a total bust, but if any day could be called the worst day, this was it. We started off with some psycho bird possibly trying to dig its way into our hut. Never did figure out what that weird call was. But he was certainly a unique fellow. Coffee'd up and it was time to hit the Mayan ruins!!

The trip was about 2 hour from our hotel, again on long, unpaved roads. Well, we get about 30 minutes from our hotel and the car starts chugging. It restarted 3 times but then it was just dead. Sparks were not flying as they should. So, we were stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere Belize. But our second tour guide took the working car and was going to call and send a new one to pick us up. Only problem with that is the town where the company is based was about an hour from where we were stuck. But we could handle an hour, right?

This was me when I first got out of the car. Imagine me 3.5 hours later.
So after an hour there was no sign of our rescue vehicle. So our tour guide started wandering around trying to find a cell phone signal. He eventually did and said that a car was NOW coming. So it would be another hour on the side of the road. We were getting eaten alive by bugs, even though we reapplied our DEET multiple times. John and I resorted to rudimentary rock games in the middle of the road. A truck of military guys drove by and whistled at me. The other couple on our tour, an older British couple, might have been plotting our tour guide's demise.

3.5 hours after we broke down, we were finally rescued. And it was finally time for Mayan ruins! Of course, ruins were supposed to be in the morning and there was to be more waterfall swimming in the afternoon. But because we wasted half the day on a dirt road we missed the waterfall. Still sad.

Anyway, Caracol.

Adrian, our tour guide, was obviously fairly knowledgeable about the Mayans but I got quite lost. There were axe events and star events and rulers who were awesome and rulers who were not. There were dwarfs. And rooms that were either prisons or dwarf rooms. We climbed all the way up the main temple and chased some cool birds. Sadly, there were no monkeys.

There's apparently a snake and a jaguar here. I called it a dragon.

People are buried here.

Garden dragon. Protector of crops.

From my queenly throne...

Sun god.

So we got back for dinner and more relaxing. I wandered around with a rum drink trying to find the monkeys. Seriously, I was lied to about the monkeys.

Sunset at the lodge.
